Description
1-88 is a high grab, contact adhesive in the convenience of a spray can. It will bond to a wide variety of sub floors including concrete, sand / cement screed, plywood, flooring grade chipboard and hardboard. It is ideal for permanent bonds that require good initial bond strength. It provides good temperature resistance and, if protected from contamination, has an open time of several hours. 1-88 provides an aggressive, fast, strong and permanent waterproof bond. Suitable for use with synthetic backed, gel backed and felt backed carpets, carpet tiles, underlay and associated products.
The spray pattern of 1-88 contact adhesive is a web. This helps to apply enough coat weight of adhesive to bond different substrates. Always test a small sample of the materials first to ensure the suitability of the product for the application. For instance, some vinyl’s contain large amounts of plasticizer which, over time, can migrate and soften the bond. Do not use on flexible PVC or expanded polystyrene.
High grab contact adhesive 1-88 is a multi-purpose spray adhesive, extremely versatile, with a long open time, high tack, that provides a permanent bond.

Directions on how to use high grab spray contact adhesive
- USE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA
- Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Excessive dust will impair performance. Concrete and screed floors should be fully cured with an efficient damp proof membrane. For best results the substrate and product should be bonded at temperatures between 15°C – 25°C.
- Asphalt and surface membranes must be covered with at least 3mm of good quality smoothing compound.
- Dusty or friable surfaces should be treated with a suitable primer. Underfloor heating should be turned off for 48 hours prior to and after the installation.
- When the adhesive is dry to the touch it is ready for the bond to be made.
- Porous substrates may require two applications.
- Drying takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes depending on substrates, ambient temperature and humidity. Over spraying and pooling of the adhesive will increase drying.
This product is also available in larger canisters upon request. For larger canisters the following directions apply.
- Attach a suitable spray nozzle, to the spray gun. Using a Spray Gun with a 40cm extension will allow the adhesive to be applied whilst standing.
- Connect the hose to the canister and the spray gun to the hose and tighten the connections.
- Open the valve on the canister. The valve should remain open until the canister is used up. Use the locking nut on the gun after use. Turning off the valve will result in the adhesive drying in the hose and gun causing blockages.
- Hold the spray gun 10-20cm away at 90° to the surface and apply a uniform coat of adhesive, to both substrates, ensuring 80-100% coverage.
- When the adhesive is dry to the touch it is ready for the bond to be made.
- After spraying, remove the spray gun tip and rinse with solvent cleaner before it has cured.
- It is important to remember that 1-88 is a contact adhesive and forms a bond by sticking to itself. so there must be sufficient adhesive on both surfaces for this to happen.
- Allow the high grab spray contact adhesive to tack up and protect from contamination whilst this happens. The adhesive is ready to bond when it feels dry to the touch and does not transfer. Bring the two substrates together and press from the centre
out to exclude air. Roll floor coverings with 65kg roller. - Keep the valve open and the hose attached to the canister until there is no more adhesive. If the hose is
removed, clean through with solvent cleaner to prevent adhesive drying, which will cause the gun and hose to
block. Turn the canister off before removing the hose.
